To the Mom yesterday at Walmart

Yesterday was a big errand day for us. We left the house at 10:30 yesterday morning and made a bunch of stops. We met Melissa and Jay and their kids at Arctic Circle for lunch and so the kids could play. They had a blast and I thought after that they'd be refreshed and ready for our last stop at Walmart. I was wrong. By then, they were tired and ready for naps, but they were doing ok. A bit whiny, but not too bad. Until I told Griffin he couldn't have any stickers. Griffin decided he'd had enough and started throwing a fit. If you know Griffin's fits at all, you will know that he does not take well to redirection. Trying to distract him just ticks him off more. So, I scooped him up and carried him while steering the cart with one hand. Then Max ran full speed into a cart. He was trying to keep up with me (I was trying to hurry), and he was not watching where he was running and SMACK. The lady pushing the cart felt so bad, although there was not a thing she could have done to avoid it. Anyway, I had to put the yelling Griffin down I while I comforted Maxton. Right then I was thinking of doing something I've never done before--abandoning the cart with all the groceries and just leaving. Two things prevented me from doing this: one was we only had two or three diapers left between Griffin and Aubriana and dang it, we had to have those diapers that were in the cart. Same with the milk. We had maybe two inches at home. We were also leaving in just a bit to go to my great-grandma's 102 birthday party and if we left, we'd have no time to buy those things before driving to Ogden. So, I was just trying to deal with it as best as I could and hoping that they'd calm down and that we weren't disturbing others.

Anyway, I noticed a mom with two kids. Then a few minutes later, while I was comforting Griffin, we ran into this same mom by the yogurt. She approached me and so nicely said, "I wish there was something I could do to help you." I thanked her and said I hoped they'd be ok in a few minutes. Then she said something I will probably never forget, "You are doing so well. You are such a good mom," with such kindness and conviction. I'm tearing up just writing that out. A few seconds later, Griffin calmed down and we were able to finish our shopping, but that was a very hard five minutes. I really wish I could have told her just how much that meant to hear, but we didn't run into her again.

I'm such a perfectionist when it comes to being a mom. I've gotten with that I'm not athletic. I'm fine with the fact that I will never be a great writer. I happy with my ability as a scrapbooker. I even think I'm a good wife. But the thought that I have failings as a mother (as everyone does, I know), just kills me. I do my best, but I feel so flawed. David's on a business trip, so last night, I could not sleep because I was thinking about this, tears leaking into my pillow, as I prayed and thanked my Heavenly Father for a few kind words when I needed it the most. I hope that lady is blessed a million times over.

Learning to Ice Skate

Just a quick note about learning to ice skate. My dad asked in the comments section when I learned. I remember going for the first time, I think I was Xander's age. I don't remember much, except my hands being frozen and hugging the side the whole time. Then I got a bit older and started roller skating. Then when inline skates got really popular, I saved and saved (I was probably 10 or 11 or so) until I had $50 and I bought my own pair. I learned to do those well and it's the same type of motion to ice skate. I wish I was better, but it does tickle me to see that I'm better than David at it. Just because it's probably one of the few ways I will ever be able to do anything athletic better than him.

Maddy's Birthday

A while ago, Melissa asked me if I would do the cakes for her kids' birthdays. Knowing I would probably be ready to try cake making again by then, I said that I would, of course. So, this week was Maddy's birthday. I had such a blast making a girly cake! She loved it. When we brought it out to sing to her, she was delighted and was clapping her hands. Also, that girl can jabber! I've never heard a little girl who can talk so quickly. She's such a doll and such a princess. Here are some pics:

My Nephew

This is my nephew, Hyrum. He is such a hoot. I had to post this today, because I don't want to forget this story. So, my sister Melissa and I trade babysitting for a date night once a week. A few days ago, it was my turn to have her kids. Griffin at one point gets frustrated and chucks a sippy cup at Hyrum's head. I was there, saw the whole thing happen. Before I can even do anything (like punish Griffin and wonder when he's going to figure out that you can't throw hard things), Hyrum comes whining to me, rubbing his head, saying "Griffin hurt my IMAGINATION." :) I guess I would be pretty upset too if someone hurt my imagination.

We had such a wonderful Valentine's Day!

David does the best things to make it special. He's so amazing that way. It was a nice break, since I've been sick and Aubriana has been sick (still is, poor thing). We cooked a really nice dinner together, then went ice skating. I can't even remember the last time I went ice skating. It was so nice. It was college night, so it started at 8:00 and went to 11:00 with no one under 16. The first time around the rink, I was hugging the side and unsteady, but I soon caught the hang of it again. David was so cute, because for once, he's not as good as me at something. He also kept getting bum skates and returning them, once he even broke a shoelace. Once he got a good pair of skates though, he improved rapidly. It was such a fun date, although a bit strange. It kinda made me feel old to be around all those college kids. I told David I bet I was the only girl there with four kids. ;)

He also spoiled me as usual with the gifts. He got me two gift certificates to See's, the DVD of My Fair Lady (!), some beads and two things of lotion from Bath and Body works. He got some handguns and a card.

I love these sort of quizes--What Your Favorite Movies Say about You

So, I came across this cool website called Cinescopes, like horoscopes, but based on the movies you like. I love things like this. So, I put in these movies:

Singin' in the Rain
Monsters Inc
French Kiss
The Philadelphia Story
Pride and Prejudice
Moulin Rouge
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Harry Potter (any of them, but especially The Prisoner of Azcaban)
The Lord of the Rings
The Princess Bride

This is what it says about me:
You are the Vivacious Romantic
Quirky and flirtatious, Vivacious Romantics are in love with the idea of love. It's natural for them to find romance and beauty in everything around them; whether that's a sunset or a puppy. Their sensitivity and compassion for others is inspirational to friends and family. And their quick wit doesn't hurt them, either. Vivacious Romantics enjoy movies about heroes who enjoy playing the game of love.

I'd say they got me pretty accurately.

Ok, I know it's sort of silly, but I'm EXCITED!

I've been doing tons of design work for American Crafts for the last little bit, a lot of stuff for QVC, but since we no longer have cable, I haven't gotten to see if any of my stuff had made it on air. Today was supposed to be a big craft day, so I went and looked it up, and yep! there was some of my stuff!! That is just sooooo cool!

If you want to watch it, I tried, but I can't link directly to it. But if you go to qvc.com and search for "American Crafts Chipboard" it will come up as the first item. Click on that, then click on the watch video tab.

The stuff you can see of mine is the card on the right with the big white flourish (Lisa picks it up after a while) and the last layout they show is Aubriana and David.

It's these kinds of things that make it so worth it to work so hard. :)

A Few Funny Xander Stories

He's got his own way of looking at the world. On Monday I think it was, Melissa came over to get something. She hadn't gone to church on Sunday. This was their conversation:

Xander: 'Issa, why didn't you go to church?
Melissa: I just didn't.
Xander: Were you sick?
Melissa: No, I wasn't sick.
Xander: Well, if you're not sick, you should go to church. Why didn't you go then?
Melissa: I just didn't.
Xander: I bet that made Heavenly Father sad.

Nothing like getting lectured by a five year old.

He also recently asked me when we were going to have a new baby. I explained to him that we probably wouldn't have any more. I am thinking more and more all the time that we are done. Plus, I just lost every last pound of baby weight. Still, I can understand why he asked me. I agree, it feels like I'm always pregnant. We've had a new baby coming nearly the whole time he's been alive. He was sad that we weren't having any more. He loves babies almost as much as I do.
