Another Cake Post

Yep, tons of fall birthdays in our family. Melissa asked me to do a pumpkin cake for Miles' first birthday and she wanted a small one for his smash cake, but it wouldn't be right to do only two, so I made a medium one as well. The cake inside is lemon with lemon frosting. Everything is marshmallow fondant, except the words, which are piped.

I'm so happy with the way it turned out and it is actually one of my faster cakes. I think I spent maybe 6 hours on it. I can't wait for him to dig into it tomorrow at his party!

The lettering: Close up of the stem. I love the stem. Another view, slightly from the top.

Melissa tagged me. . .

Rules: Each person has to answer questions about their sweetheart. At the end of your post tag 4 people, post their names and then go to their blogs and leave them a comment about the tag.

What is your husbands name? - David Henry

How long have you been married? - 7 years

How long did you date? - We didn't really date. Mostly we fell in love and got engaged.

How old is he? - 29

Who eats sweets? - We are both junk food addicts.

Who said I Love You first? - David. I wanted to say it, but I didn't want to come off as desperate, so I waited for him to say it first. Not that it was a long wait.

Who is taller? - Yeah, he is.

Who can sing best? - Humm, toughy. He's got a better voice.

Who is smarter? - Me, for sure. Ok, we are about equal. He does have a slightly higher IQ than I do, but they are both so high that at those numbers it doesn't make much difference. Not to brag or anything.

Who does the laundry? - Me, although he folds it with me most of the time and he will run up and change it for me if I ask.

Who pays the bills? - We have bills? He takes care of all of that.

Who sleeps on the right side of the bed? - I do.

Who mows the lawn? My brother (we are living with my parents and it's his job. David will if we have a house until the boys are old enough).

Who cooks dinner? Mostly David. Although I've been cooking more lately and I went to Dream Dinners yesterday. We ate one tonight. I cooked it. It was good.

Who drives? - Always David.

Who is first to admit they are wrong? - We are never wrong.

Who kissed who first? - I made it clear I wanted to kiss him and so he did. He might tell you differently. Don't listen to him.

Who asked who out first? - He pursued me for about the first hour. Then I pursued him. I do think he asked me out first. We were pretty much both smitten instantly.

Who wears the pants? - We take turns.

I don't feel like tagging anyone.

I am so grateful and excited!

Last week I got a life-changing email (and yes, I come by my flair for the dramatic naturally). It was from BYU-Idaho. They are starting a pilot program for students who want to finish their degrees through online courses and since I had expressed interest in it a few months ago, they emailed me to let me know about the program and ask if I would like to apply.

If you know anything about my school saga, you will know how absolutely ecstatic this makes me!! I left school when David finished, 30 credits shy of a degree. I thought it would be simple to finish up at BYU. How wrong that was! BYU wants you to take at least 20 credits of your major classes with them--perfectly reasonable, except that I only had 2 English classes left to take and didn't feel like taking them all again or starting over with a new major. They also will only let you finish your degree online if you take 20 credits of classes on their campus, which would have been hard for me to do, considering there are four little people running around here and that's why I wanted the online option anyway. I did do three semesters at UVSC (now UVU), but it was still going to take me quite a while to get a degree that way, plus, I left one of my classes mid-semester because I was overwhelmed, stressed and had just had Griffin, so I would have to take that class over again and I've been dreading it.

I feel like this is an answer to my prayers. I can't believe I'm going back to school, but I am. The kids are a bit older now and I things in my life have settled down. I feel ready. Bring it on!

Photos from Griffin's PAR-TAY!

We had Griffin's party last Saturday, but I'm just now getting around to uploading photos. It was pretty fun. Here he is opening a Power Ranger's movie:Now for his cake antitics. Sometimes I wish I could see inside that boy's head. I have not a clue what he was thinking.

Covering the eyes:
Sticking his tongue in his cheek:
Trying to blow out the candles:
Daddy finally steps in a pretends to help and we finally get them blown out:
The party people. Miles and Aubriana were sleeping. Or maybe Miles was up, but not in the picture (Hyrum, Maddy, Griffin, Xander and Maxton):
For his birthday, he got two Power Ranger movies, two Power Rangers action figures, a Cars puzzle, Legos, and the Leapfrog fridge letter magnets.

We are go for Griffin's party tomorrow!

I had such a hard time deciding what kind of cake to make Griffin for his birthday. The only thing he was saying was Power Rangers. After just doing the TMNT cake for Xander, I wasn't in the mood. Plus, he's only turning three, so I wanted to do something less middle-sized boy and something more little boy. I'm sure I'm going to do roomfuls of Power Rangers, Batman, Spiderman, and other various and assorted super heroes in the next few years and I wanted to do something fun for me. Selfish mommy. Anyway, I asked him what his favorite animal was and he said puppy, so I give you Bingo, The Cake. He took me about 10 hours to do, but since Griffin's party isn't until tomorrow, I'm feeling relaxed and happy he's done.

I had a lot of fun making him, not any stress at all, except the stress of keeping Griffin from stealing frosting, marshmallows and fondant, all of which disappeared into his hollow gut and from there into his bloodstream. Luckily, the damage was minimal: I had to write his greeting in fondant instead of frosting since it fell victim to his sneaky fingers, but the rest I was able to retrieve in time to save most of it. He also asked me about 100 times if he could have the leftover fondant yet (I always let them play with the leftovers). Yeah, that got old. I don't know how he has the patience and good humor to say it the 100th with the same energy and hopeful enthusiasm that he used the firs timet. Sometime that skill will come in handy for something other than driving his over-achieving mother nutso.

Warning: Mommy Brag Ahead

David and I went to our first ever parent/teacher conference yesterday. It was so good to meet with his teacher and hear how he's doing. I wasn't that surprised, since I've been able to volunteer in his class a few times, but it was still good to hear his teacher recognize his strengths and tell how she plans to help him improve. She said he does great in class, that he gets along well with others in his class, both boys and girls, that he does his work well and on time, that he picks up things quickly.

She was also very impressed with his drawing skills. She said that the self portrait which I included at the top of the page was on a 2nd grade level. She also chuckled a bit over his pattern around the edges. He passed off all the things they are supposed to know for September with flying colors. He got 26/26 on upper case, lower case recognition and 26/26 for their sounds. I was happy to hear that because when he's reading, he occasionally mixes up b and d. He is getting quite good at reading. Sunday he read us Green Eggs and Ham, which really impressed me, as it has over 60 pages. He is also working his way through the Bob books and starting to read more complicated words, like "hopped."

He can count to 100 and beyond. He's still working on not blurting out answers and raising his hand, but that will come. I love that when she asked what he would do to make their class better, he wrote "I will wrc [work]." That is so typical of Xander. Anyway, I am just so happy and proud that he loves school. His teacher is wonderful. I am hoping that this year will lay a foundation for years of school success. And that concludes my mommy brag.
