Art Print Download Freebie: Blue Poppies

I've been working on the art in my kitchen for a while now. I had a nice, large, empty wall to start with, which means a lot of art. I'm over here rubbing my hands maniacally at the thought of how much fun it is to make a beautiful space out of nothing.

We had this awkward corner where I needed a custom fit frame. Of course, I'm not about to pay for that, so I had David build me a makeshift frame out of some trim we had leftover from our wainscoting. When he went out to start cutting the pieces, I went to work on the art.

Here it is, hanging under my kitchen message center. Yeah, it needs to move up a few inches, but I'm fresh out of drywall screws. So many details to keep track of. I'll get there eventually.

First, I drew some poppies in Illustrator. I stink at freehand drawing. I would never be able to draw like this without Illustrator and some good inspiration in some googled artwork.

Then, I printed it out. My printer was not happy and the black didn't show through like I would have wanted. So, I took a paintbrush to it. A little black paint later, and I had the poppies outlined.

To distress it a little more, I watered down some brown acrylic craft paint, and splattered it, then inked the edges.

By the time David had all the pieces cut, I had my artwork done. It's pretty small, just 4x9" or so.

After I was all done, I scanned it at photo quality, and if you click on the link below, it will take you to a file sharing site and you can snag it for your own. And don't feel like you have to frame it. I think it would be so sweet as a card.

  10. Are you kidding me? Illustrator? Is this Adobe Illustrator? I tried to learn that waaaay back in the '80's - when Pagemaker was THE program. I gave up.

I'd love to learn it or some other drawing program. I just draw then paint my stuff.

Maybe you & I should barter, hmmm?

And I don't believe you can't draw. We're always our own worst critics. Something tells me you're a lot better than you think.

    Oh, btw, GREAT project!
