We Are Moving, Baby!

I am so thrilled to be living above ground for the first time since Griffin was born (that's 4.5 years ago, people!). We closed on Tuesday and I'm busy moving this week. Since we started looking at house 9 months ago, this is probably the biggest UFO in my life and how cool is it that's it's going to create endless UFO for me in the future.
Anyway, I didn't get to do my project progress like I usually do, but here's some pretty photos of the blossoms in our back yard from the apple and cherry trees.

I'm in love! I love spring! More pictures to come, promise.
PS I finished my jar collection before we moved and took a picture. I totally *heart* them! Can't wait to set it all up in my new room.

Share-A-Craft: More Spoons in a Shadow Box

Share-A-Craft is just as much fun as a tilt-a-whirl, but with less stomach upset and possible vomiting. Every Thursday, I post a project of any type that I've recently or not so recently done.

I thought about doing a tutorial with this, but it's so similar to my other shadow box tutorial, that I decided to share it here. I'm going to tell you basically how I did it, but it's a lot less detailed than my regular tutorials.

I had some more spoons leftover from the first shadowbox, so of course, I wanted to display them too.

I found this great frame at Savers for $1. It looks like it's supposed to be for an embroidery project, but it suits my purposes just fine. No glass, but for a $1, I'll avoid being my usual picky self.

I wanted a longer, thinner frame, so I took a rubber mallet to it and knocked off one of the 10" pieces. Then I used my husband's miter saw (that was a good present, go me for getting it for him!), and trimmed down the 8" pieces to about 6" on both sides, based on my spoon measurements. I glued it back together, and it looked like this:

Then I primed and painted. I made a back for it using a piece of chipboard, covered in two sheets of scrapbooking paper. The green is My Mind's Eye, from the Penny Lane collection and the overlay is KI Memories. I love the combination together. I attached it to the back with a little hot glue (I love this stuff!). Then I adhered the spoons with a little hot glue, added the hanging hook the frame came with, and that's it! So simple to make, but I really find it beautiful and so cheerful. Hopefully it will be hanging in my kitchen before too long.
In other kitchen utensil themed prettiness, aren't these stencils divine? My brain is going like crazy, wanting to work them into my design. We shall see. . .

A Hoot and A 1/2 Digital Scrapbook Kit Freebie

New to digital scrapbooking? Never downloaded a digital kit before? What in the world are .rar files anyway? Get your answers here: How to Unzip Files So You Can Digi Scrap.

I think I might have missed the owl trend craze by a little bit. I've heard that roosters are the new owl (although that is almost a year old). I think that is crazy talk. I love owls. Chickens scare me. Hopefully, we won't move onto ducks/geese from here. If we do, I will be the trendiest person ever, because my thrift store is full of ceramic ducks of all shapes and sizes, and I can totally do that for nearly nothing.

Anyway, considering I still like owls, I ignored the trend and designed this kit. I'm cool challenged, so I will continue to like owls.

This layout is my nephew, Miles, with two of my little guys. Miles is a hoot. He's freakin' hilarious, even though he doesn't really talk much and when he does, they are all one syllables and sound exactly the same. Only my sister has the code cracking skills necessary to understand him. Doesn't matter. He's got a glint in his eye that always makes me grin right back. It's like I don't even have a choice.

Kit Contents: 9 Pattern Papers, 4 Colors Ric Rac, 2 Journaling Blocks, 1 Date Label, 1 Set Stitching, 4 Owl Stickers, 1 Branch Sticker

Once Again, It's Time for Thrift Store Finds

My sister and I went last week to Savers again, for dollar Mondays. I'm starting to learn that you really need to be there right at 9:00 am when they open to get the best stuff. I got in there quick and politely grabbed up all dollar deals. I didn't pay more than 99 cents for any of this stuff.

Ok, first off, this oh so cute candle holder. It's right up my alley. It's not alive, so I can't kill it, but it still seems so pretty to me. It started off white and chipped and pretty dirty:

Now it's all shiny and understated.

Next up, this wire basket/bowl thingy. I love the shape of it and I've seen it there before, but this time it was on sale, so I snatched it up. It also desperately needed a coat of paint.

Before:

After:

I loved the shape of this bottle. A few weeks ago, I bought a charming planter and was teased mercilessly for purchasing a "spittoon," sooooo, if this ever held anything prohibited by the Mormon tradition (coffee, tea, tobacco or alcohol), please let me know so I can be prepared for the teasing. I'm feeling quite paranoid about it now, even though it's just silly.

I love it's shape and it just needed a little spruce on the lid, so I didn't take before pictures.

Love these little green cups (ok, I'm feeling paranoid again here).

This is another something that didn't need a thing done to it:

Did I betray that I have no clue what it's called? A candle holder of some sort? I like the slightly industrial feel of it and the shape of the glass is beautiful.

A pretty wooden platter. I may use this for a platter, or I might end up doing something else with it. Don't you think it would look so cool with some vinyl lettering in the middle and hanging on the wall?

This might be my favorite buy of the day. I have a thing for ceramic animals, even though I'm not a huge fan of real life animals.

He's such a vintage little thing and reminds me of my great-grandma. He's going in my kitchen, although I'm not sure if I'm going to do the traditional scrubber holder thing or not.

The After:

Speaking of my kitchen, we are moving this week, into our very first house, if all goes well! I canNOT wait to show you our new place. Things might be a little different on the blog for a bit, but I will be posting all sorts of fun and exciting things as we move in. Wait till you get a load of the kitchen table my husband built! I even helped a little. And pretty soon I'll be showing off my stuff in its natural habitat.

Blast from the Past Saturday

Hey everyone! I thought I'd start a new feature where I post a past post. I might go back a year, or it might be more. You just never know with me, because I'm soooo unpredictable (this from the girl who has Lucky Charms every morning for breakfast).

I had to share this one today because it's just too cute for words. It still fits Aubrey and she wears it from time to time. I need to make another one. Would you all be interested in a pattern?

Without further ado, the post from April 14, 2009:

I've been learning lately how to do my own patterns. This is soooo fun. Quite an adventure, but with Project Runway and a duct-tape dress form complete with baby Buddha belly, I'm armed with all the knowledge and tools I need to make my own clothes. $4 worth of fabric and a little time later and I had this:

PS Wow, I hit publish when I didn't mean to do it, so if you read my post with a feed reader, sorry about all the wackiness.

Project Progress: UFO Week 3

I missed last week, with my UFOs. I haven't finished much lately, because I've been doing new projects. I did get one thing done this week--my crazy quilt! Yay!

Have you been finishing anything lately? I'm going two more weeks, then find a new project progress (probably something decorating related!!).

I think it turned out pretty cool. I had a lot of fun free-motion quilting this.

Tutorial: Shadow Box from Regular Frames

I find shadow boxes so charming. I was really inspired by this little one, which I saw on a blog I read. I totally love that idea. It got me thinking about shadow boxes and I was inspired to make one from three dollar stores frames. It's a pretty simple project, but I love the end result.

Ok, first supplies:
3 Wood Frames (more on that later)
Wood glue or Liquid Nails
Wood filler
Clamps or painters tape
Painters tape
Spray paint
Scrap of scrapbooking paper
Something to put in your box
Pliers
Craft knife

Step 1: Choosing Your Frame
Choosing the right type of frame is essential for this project. You want to find three frames of the same design that will stack flatly on top of each other. I was really surprised these embossed frames from the dollar store worked, but the relief doesn't rise above the edges of the frame and they stack flatly, with the sides square to the front.

Step 2: Prepare the Frames for Gluing
First, take out the glass from two frames. On the third frame, bend up the staples or whatever is keeping your glass in, but leave the glass there. This is going to be your top frame, so make sure it's the prettiest of the three. With a pair of pliers, wrap the tabs in a circle toward the frame, so that they keep the glass in place but are not visible from the front. Do the same thing to the middle frame, or simply remove the tabs. The back frame you can leave alone.

Step 3: Glue Your Frames
Stack your frames to make sure everything looks good. You need to leave the glass in the top frame, otherwise you won't be able to get it back in once the stack is glued. Generously apply glue to the front of the bottom and middle frame, stack, square up and clamp, using scraps to protect the finish of the frame. If you don't have clamps, press down on the stack and have someone help you tightly wrap painters tape around the frame to hold them in place. Let dry overnight.

Step 4: Wood Filler and Sanding
Remove the clamps or painters tape. Fill in the cracks on the side with wood filler. Let dry, then sand the heck out of the frames.

Step 5: Protect Your Glass for Painting
I would recommend painting your frame to hide the wood filler on the sides. You want to protect the glass. Use painters tape to tape off the glass, using the craft knife to get into the corners, then use it to lightly trim off the excess tape. Do the same to the back of the glass if you want to paint the inside (which I opted not to do).

Step 5: Painting
Paint. Let dry.

Step 6: Prepare Back
Remove tape from glass, and clean it. Decide on what you want to put in your glass. I decided to use some silver spoons I got from my great-grandma. I picked a scrapbooking paper that goes with the theme of my kitchen, then trimmed it to fit the back of the frame. Adhere to back.

Step 7: Add Objects
I used a needle and thread to secure my spoons in the box, plus a touch of hot glue that will come right off if I ever decide to remove the spoons. I also used a little glue on the backside of the stitching, to make sure it really stayed in place. Then I popped it back into the frame, and that's it!

I'm so excited to get my very own kitchen and I already know this is going up on some shelves near my table (which David is nearly done building me--it looks AMAZING). I'm also super excited to start taking pictures with my actual furniture in the background. My mom has the best light, so of course I go up to take pictures at her house, but it's weird to have her things in the background. My mom has beautiful taste, but it's not my taste; I feel like explaining every time that it's not my couch/chair/piano/table/lamp/tassel or whatever that shows up in the picture. But the Dr. Pepper is always mine. :)

I wish I knew more of the story of these spoons, but I have no idea why my grandma had them. I have a few more, and I love the individual character they have and they make me smile when I see them.
